Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu was born on the eighth day of the month of Shravana (corresponding to August or September). This day is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm and joy across the country. On this day, people visit the local temple and seek bleesings of Lord Krishna on this special occasion. Women fast till midnight and then sing devotional songs for Lord Krishna. In Maharashtra, this day is known as Gokulashtami where the ‘dahi handi’ ritual is very famous. Lord Krishna’s childhood and adulthood tales are very popular and are sung throughout the country. May all of us get His blessings for a happy and peaceful life.

Lord Krishna’s Childhood

Lord Krishna was born midnight on Ashthami Tithi in the month of Shravan. He was the ninth and the last avatar of Lord Vishnu. He was the son of Vasudev and Devaki, of the Vrishi clan of the Yadavas from Mathura. Due to political reasons and threats to his life, Krishna was sent to his foster mother Yashoda and Nanda of Gokul. He grew up there with his brother Balram.

In various legends, Krishna is described as a herdsman, a mischievous boy and a protector of the people. He is thought to be the one who is beloved by people in Mathura and Vrindavan. The Gopis were enchanted by Lord Krishna. He had fallen for Radha, a gopi or milk maid. It is said that whenever Krishna played the flute on the banks of the Yamuna, the gopis would come and dance with him. Even when the distance between them is great, the Gopis used to meditate with him. Even today, the Radha-Krishna Ras Leela’s are very popular during Janmashtami.

Eventually, Lord Krishna returns to his hometown of Mathura, overthrows his uncle and tyrant king Kamsa and reinstates his grandfather Ugrasena as the king of the Yadavas. In the epic Mahabharata,  Lord Krishna plays a key role. After the Kurukshetra war, Krishna leads his Yadava subjects to Dwarka in modern day Gujarat. Lord Krishna is said to have died after the Kurukshetra war; a hunter named Jara kills him by shooting an arrow, thinking that Krishna is a deer. Lord Krishna forgives Jara and passes away. The place where he died is known as Bhalka or Dehotsarga in present day Gujarat.

Lord Krishna is well known as the God of Compassion, Tenderness and love. He is generally depicted with a blue or black coloured skin and a flute on his mouth. This Janmashtami rein in the good times just like Lord Krishna. Download the Cubber app and get a chance to win exciting prizes.

Gaining freedom-after 190 years of colonialism

The British ruled us for 190 whole years before we were granted freedom on the 15th of August, 1947. These 190 years saw countless rebellions, political changes and a full fledged mutiny. We were taken advantage of due to our disunity and internal bickering. The British first solely traded with India and slowly started to govern the places it held. They eventually got to rule the entire country. Nevertheless, as an independent country we have seen a lot of ups and downs in these 70 years- we have fought 3 wars with Pakistan and one with China, there was the time of then PM Indira Gandhi’s emergency in the 1970s and there was the liberalization of the economy in 1991. These are a few of the developments which have redefined the way India has changed after independence.

In these seventy years we have seen our economy grow leaps and bounds to the tune of $2 trillion currently with consistently high economic growth rates. Every year tens of thousands of people are being lifted out of poverty and millions of jobs are being created. This independence day, let us take an oath of nationalism and that we will always be loyal to our homeland. Happy Indepedence Day!

Raksha Bandhan symbolizes the love and affection between a brother and sister. It is a time to forgive and forget, a time to let bygones be bygones and to look forward to a future of prosperity and success. Raksha Bandhan literally means ‘bond of protection’ and it signifies the strength of the brother who will protect his sister. Raksha Bandhan or ‘rakhi’ as it is popularly known is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Shravan(August). This year Rakhi falls on the 7th of August. On this day, girls tie a sacred thread on the forearms of their brothers or male friends. The brothers are expected to gift their sisters during this day. Both brothers and sisters exchange sweets to greet each other on this special day.

History of Raksha Bandhan

There are many historical references to the origin of the festival. The most famous of which is the one at the time of Alexander the Great. When he conquered parts of Western India he was shaken by the fury of King Puru of India. Seeing all of this, Alexander’s wife approached Puru and tied a rakhi to him. Another story talks about Rani Karnavati, the widowed queen of Chittor state, who sent a rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun as she could not defend her kingdom against the apparent invasion by the Sultan of Gujarat. Humayun was touched by the gesture and sent troops to Chittor to protect it from the Sultan of Gujarat. Many such stories have emerged, where queens have sent rakhis to their husbands adversaries, won hearts and stopped wars.

Celebrations today

This festival is celebrated with great pomp and gusto throughout the country. Brothers visit their married sisters with a pooja thali in one hand and a gift in the other. The sister begins by offering pooja and then tying the rakhi on the brother’s wrist. The entire family then proceeds for a scrumptious feast after the ceremony.

Raksha Bandhan is a day we remember the unbreakable bond between brother and sister. It helps us to appreciate the sacrifices sisters make for their brothers and vice versa. This festival is celebrated by Hindus across India and in immigrant Hindu communities in Guyana, Suriname, Mauritius, Fiji and other countries. Many Jains and Sikhs too celebrate this bond of togetherness and festivities. With the coming months may you all have a healthy relationship of love, caring and security.

This festive season bring joy and celebrate the bond between brothers and sisters only with Cubber! Happy Raksha Bandhan.
